Spanish legislation requires you to renew your driving license once its validity period has ended.
Each Driving License has a validity period (see validity period).
The validity of the permits is conditional on the holder not having completely lost their points and maintaining the requirements required for their granting.
Likewise, the period of validity of the various types of permit may be reduced if, at the time of its granting or extension of its validity, it is proven that the holder suffers from an illness or deficiency that, although at the moment it does not prevent it, is susceptible to get worse.
Causes that prevent renewal:
a) The deprivation by judicial resolution of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds.
b) The intervention, precautionary measure or suspension of the permit or license, whether agreed upon judicially or administratively.
The class B permit has a validity period of 10 years up to age 65. From the age of 65, the validity period is 5 years.
Permits for professional classes, C1, C1 + E, C, C + E, D1, D1 + E, D and D + E:
*Five years as long as the owner does not reach 65 years of age.
*From the age of 65 the validity period will be three years.
The request to extend the permit or license can be submitted three months before the date of loss of validity.
Bringing forward the submission of the application does not, in any case, imply a loss of days of validity, since the extension will begin to be counted from the date on which the authorization to be renewed loses validity.
The cost of renewing a driving licence is the sum of:
(1) the renewal fees, set by the DGT and updated every year, and.
(2) the psycho-physical examination fees. The basic cost is €47.32 but if you book through our website it is reduced to €39.99.
For a person aged 70 or over, the renewal has a fixed cost of €55.
The holder of an expired driving licence does not lose it, no matter how much time has passed. You will be able to obtain an extension without any problems or additional costs (in some cases of very old moped licences it may be necessary to have them regularised by the DGT).
