DGT warns that your license is about to expire

The Dirección General de Tráfico, from this month of February 2019, is once again sending drivers an informative letter in which they are warned that their driving license is about to expire.

In this way, and after having detected an increase in the number of drivers circulating with an expired license, the number of drivers circulating without a valid license will be reduced.

2,750,000 letters will be sent out this year and they will be sent two months before the expiration date of the license, so that the driver will have enough time to be able to renew it. The letter also informs the driver that he/she can renew his driving license without having to go to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters, by going to the Driver Examination Centers. In these centers the driver must present the National Identity Card, Passport or Residence Card in force, and after undergoing a medical examination and having a photograph taken, he/she will sign the renewal application and pay the corresponding fees together with the amount of the medical certificate.

Once the renewal is completed, you will be given a provisional authorization to drive in Spain, which will be valid for 90 days. Before the end of this period, you will receive your new driving license at your home address by mail.
