DGT warns of a stricter and more comprehensive test to obtain a driver's license

The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) wants to reform the way in which driving is taught and, above all, the way of evaluating before obtaining the driving license. In this sense, the general director Gregorio Serrano has specified that it will be essential that students attend classes in a driving school to avoid “the avalanche of unprepared students who are currently presenting themselves and who are collapsing the headquarters”.

On the other hand, new material will be added to prepare for the exam, new current study subjects or driving with aid systems such as navigators. “It is clear that we have to change the way of examining, we have to introduce new material, such as videos, where there are real traffic situations and not only answer 'a, b and c' in a test”, explains Serrano.

These measures will be included in the next Traffic Law that the DGT will present to the Ministry of the Interior in February, after 52 working groups have debated over the past year on the different aspects of road safety. Thanks to their work and after a season of prolonged strikes, Serrano explained that it has also been decided to incorporate 100 more examiners, develop road education plans and initiate awareness campaigns on the most vulnerable groups (such as pedestrians and motorcyclists).
