DGT statistics reveal that only 3 out of 10 drivers pass the practical test the first time.

According to statistics provided by the DGT regarding the year 2017 73% of the people who took the practical exam for the first time fail.

In other words, only 27% of aspiring drivers pass the first test. As for the theory test, the number of those who pass on the first attempt stands at 46%.

These statistics also reveal that one factor that has a considerable influence is the province in which the student decides to take the license, as they show that it is easier to pass in smaller cities. In the ranking of driving schools with the best pass rates in the practical test, it can be seen that the top 13 places go to those located in Murcia, Pontevedra, Guipúzcoa, Ciudad Real, Toledo -the capital of Castilla-La Mancha has four driving schools in the top 10- and Cuenca. In 14th place is a driving school in Barcelona, but you have to go down to 34th place to find the one with the highest pass rate in Madrid.

How much does the driving license cost?

Another aspect to take into account is the price of the driving license, which varies greatly depending on each student, each driving school and each province. If we count the driving school registration fee and the Traffic fees, passing the theory test the first or second time -including two opportunities- costs between 200 and 250 euros, without counting the price of the necessary psycho-technical test. In the case of failing the first two times, you have to pay the traffic fee again.

The practical one depends more on the classes that each student needs. After having taken the necessary classes, some will need 10 or 15 and others may need 40, it is time to pay for the practical exam -another 130 euros and up-. In the case of passing on the first try, it stays there, but if you fail, you have to pay for the exam again. It starts to get more expensive if you fail the first two exams, since from then on it costs twice as much.

In the best cases, the license can cost around 600 euros. But, in practice, everything points to the fact that the outlay for the driving license can be 900 euros and upwards. Some causes of failure mentioned by the DGT are the impatience of the students, since many of them decide to take the exam with few classes, the lack of concentration during the practical test and nerves.
